La parola “Googol“, inventata dal matematico americano Edward Krasner, designa il numero formato dalla cifra 1 seguita da cento zeri. È poco utilizzata perché, secondo i fisici, è superiore al numero di atomi che compongono l’universo intero
Tuttavia, quando, nel 1998, Larry Page e Sergey Brin, studenti all’università di Stanford (California), creano una start-up per sfruttare il nuovo sistema di ricerca su Internet che hanno appena messo a punto, decidono di chiamarlo così, anche se si concedono una piccola licenza filologica. Per loro il termine Google simbolizza la quantità apparentemente infinita di informazioni disponibili su Internet. (more…)

Come ben sapete, Firefox include una barra delle ricerche in alto a destra che vi permette di utilizzare i più importanti motori di ricerca velocemente. Forse però non sapevate che questa piccola search bar, quando viene utilizzata, invia a Google delle informazioni che per l’utente medio sono irrilevanti, ma che per un utente più smaliziato ed alla ricerca di anonimato, sono importanti. Facciamo una prova: andiamo sul sito di Google e cerchiamo la parola cane. L’ indirizzo che appare nella barra di Firefox è questo. (more…)

Roma – Già nei mesi scorsi il responsabile della progettazione software Microsoft, Ray Ozzie, aveva inquadrato Google come uno stimolo per lanciare l”azienda di Redmond su fronti ancora poco esplorati. Today, Google announced that business and government users of Google Earth Enterprise will be able to view their organization’’s geospatial data in 2D on a browser, behind the firewall. Through a special version of the Google Maps API (the programming interface for Google Maps administrators can also embed this 2D view into any web application (much like a Google Map) and create mashups with information from external databases, spreadsheets and other data sources.
“Not only is it now easier for employees who need to access their organization’’s geo data – whether it be satellite images, terrain and elevation data or aerial imagery – to do so from almost anywhere, but they can integrate additional layers of information within their existing web applications without ever having to leave the browser,” said Matthew Glotzbach, Product Management Director, Google Enterprise. “Because businesses and government organizations can leverage the browser in addition to the downloadable Earth Enterprise client, they can share their geo data more easily across teams and departments, create mapping overlays for improved data analysis and ultimately, deliver a greater return on their technology investment.” (more…)

Google annuncia oggi il lancio di Cronologia Web in italiano. Gli utenti potranno ora rintracciare rapidamente e senza difficoltà i siti Internet che hanno visitato, oltre a modificare ed eventualmente cancellare tutti gli elementi che non desiderano nella propria cronologia web. Per poter beneficiare di questa nuova funzionalità è sufficiente disporre di un account Google e accedere al servizio tramite login.
Il lancio di oggi fa parte di un’iniziativa ben più ampia che Google sta mettendo in atto al fine di offrire ai propri utenti risultati di ricerca ancora più rilevanti ed un controllo maggiore. Accedendo al servizio di Cronologia Web, gli utenti daranno infatti a Google la possibilità di fornire loro risultati ancora più personalizzati e mirati. (more…)
